Horticultural charcoal is an all-natural soil amendment designed to improve long-term soil health by enhancing soil structure, nutrient retention, water holding capacity, and microbial activity.
Produced at high temperatures for maximum surface area, plant charcoal creates pore space in the soil that helps retain moisture, bind nutrients, and provide habitat for beneficial microorganisms.
Inspired by the ancient Terra preta soils of the Amazon, this charcoal doesn’t break down quickly or wash away—instead, it remains in the soil, helping it improve season after season. The result is healthier roots, stronger plant growth, and more resilient soil for gardens, raised beds, containers, and agricultural use.
Why Add Charcoal to Your Soil?
💧 Moisture Management
Charcoal can help soils retain water, making moisture available within the soil environment for longer periods.
🌱 Nutrient Retention
Its porous structure can interact with nutrients and help retain them within the soil rather than allowing them to move away as quickly.
🦠 Soil Biology
The pore structure of biochar can provide habitat and surfaces for beneficial microorganisms within the soil system.
🌎 Long-Lasting Carbon
Unlike organic materials that rapidly decompose, charcoal is relatively stable and can remain in soil for years.
🌿 Soil Structure
Used as part of an overall soil-management program, charcoal can contribute to a healthier soil environment.
Directions for Using Charcoal:
When adding charcoal, thoroughly mix it into the soil within the plant’s immediate root zone. For maximum benefit, extend the application area to roughly twice the size of the plant’s root mass.
Flowers & Bedding Plants
½ cup – 1 cup per plant
Small Trees & Shrubs
½ lb – 1 lb per plant
Larger Trees
1 lb – 3 lbs per tree
Raised Beds
Mix charcoal into at least the top 6 inches of soil.
Minimum: 1 lb per 4 sq ft
Maximum: 3 lbs per 4 sq ft
After two heavy applications at the maximum rate, additional
charcoal is typically unnecessary. Deeper incorporation leads to better results.
Established Plants
For existing plants, apply loose charcoal around the base using the rates above. Water thoroughly after application, then cover with mulch.
✨IMPORTANT NOTE
These are general recommendations. Research indicates that
adding more than 5% charcoal by total soil mass provides
little additional benefit. Keep in mind that root zones
often extend deeper than expected.
